An Interview With Dr. Emerson, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Gastonia

What is a Botox Injection or botox shot?

Botox is one of the two FDA approved types of Botulinum Toxin type A. Botox is manufactured by Allergan Inc., and Dysport--to other available toxin--is manufactured by Medicis Inc. This toxin has been used in many therapeutic ways over the last 30 years including for stabismus, blepharospasm, excess sweating, and other muscular disorders. It acts by preventing the release of a neurotransmitter (Acetylcholine) from a nerve ending overlying a muscle. The FDA approved it for cosmetic use for the wrinkles between the eyebrows in 2002. It prevents the wrinkles that occur with frowning, smiling, and squinting. While it is FDA approved only for the wrinkles between the eyebrows, it is used "off-label" for many other areas, especially the forehead and crow's feet.

Who is the ideal candidate for BOTOX?

The person with lines in the forehead and around the eyes caused by smiling, frowning, and squinting is the ideal candidate for Botox or Dysport. It is a quick procedure and works extremely well in most patients.

How long do the results of BOTOX last?

Both Botox and Dysport last for about 3 months, although each patient may experience individual variations. Dysport typically starts working after about one day, while Botox take about 5 days to work.

Who should perform a BOTOX procedure?

The injections should be performed by a physician or nurse injector trained in the appropriate techniques. An experienced injector should also be sought, as there is a learning curve to the correct injection techniques. Appropriate facilities and equipment should be available.

How much does BOTOX cost?

The cost of Botox and Dysport vary greatly from region to region and from office to office. Botox can range from a low of $9/unit up to a high of $15 or more/unit. A typical dose of Botox is 20-40 units and is dependent on the areas to be treated and the activity of the muscles. Dysport costs from $3.25/unit to $6/unit and generally requires 80 to 125 units per treatment.

What is the recovery period for BOTOX?

There is no real "recovery period" for Botox or Dysport. While the injections do hurt a little, most patients return to normal activities almost immediately. Some patients do have bruising from the injections and a little temporary redness and/or swelling.
