What is a Botox Injection or botox shot?
Botox is the trade name for Botulinum A Toxin. This is a highly purified toxin injected in minute quantities to relax the muscles that it is injected to. The toxin is used cosmetically to limit the motion of facial muscles that cause wrinkles when they contract. It is typically used in the frown lines between the eyebrow, forehead, crow s feet. It can also be used to relax hyperactive muscles bands in the neck and around the mouth.

While true botulinum toxin is a very toxic substance, the very minute amounts used for this procedure are extremely safe. The procedure involves numerous injections with a very fine needle, so there may be a little soreness and swelling immediately after the procedure. You can return to your usual activity but it is recommended to avoid exercise or laying flat for several hours after.

Botox works by binding receptors and blocking the nerve to muscle transmission causing the affected area of muscle to be inactivated. The block is irreversible, but new receptors are formed causing the results to dissipate after 3-6 months.
