An Interview With Dr. James Carraway, MD , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Virginia Beach

1. Is there any Botox danger?

Botox danger is very remote because large doses can be used in children and adults for correction of certain problems. For example, in a child with cerebral palsy, more Botox may be used in the medial abductor muscles of the thighs than would be used in the face of an adult. If Botox which is obtained from sources other than legitimate companies is used, this could represent a danger, and there have been cases reported nationally of this problem.

2. What is a Botox party?

It is something that should not occur for the most part. It could be a simple party to which people are invited to hear about Botox , and then to undergo treatment with that modality. In general, this could be a group gathering, without the serving of alcohol, and informing the group in general about the advantages and risks of Botox . Then, each attendee could make a decision as to whether or not she wanted Botox at that time or later. That would be a group of people seeking treatment, and could be called a Botox party.

3. Where can I find Botox doctors in my area?

Doctors qualified to administer Botox can be found on the Botox web site. In general, calling any dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s office would probably result in a positive answer, as most use it as part of their treatment routine.

4. Who is the Botox manufacturer, or who is the Botox supplier?

Manufacturers of cosmetic botulinum toxin are Allergan (BOTOX Cosmetic); Dysport™, and Myobloc .

5. What are glabellar lines (frown lines)?

Glabella frown lines are vertical lines between the eyes and give the appearance that the person is frowning. These lines come from muscles around the upper medial corners of the eyes and also two deep muscles that lie horizontally and originate on the bone, but insert into the skin. When these muscles pull, they bring in the brow from laterally and cause it to crumple in the midline giving these vertical frown lines.

6. Where can Botox injections be used?

Botox injections can be used around the eyes, the mouth area, in the neck, and when other areas of muscles need to be relaxed for either cosmetic or functional reasons. If someone has spasmodic torticollis, their sternocleidomastoid muscle may be overactive and may respond to a therapeutic injection of Botox . If someone is sweating excessively under the arms or on the palms of their hands, then Botox can be used to improve that. If there is hypertrophy of the masseter muscle causing a square-appearing jaw, Botox injections can be used to shrink the muscle down. If there is a submaxillary gland enlargement under the jawline area, then Botox can be used to shrink this gland.

7. What are the pros and cons of Botox ?

There are many pros to Botox when used in the proper manner. There are not many cons, because usually Botox is used for the indications mentioned above and which are legitimate. Therefore, most of the information and data regarding Botox shows positive effects of this for the areas of treatment which are indicated. One possible downside is that there is, in rare cases, a situation where the body no longer responds as well to the same dosage of Botox . This has not been well documented, but is certainly a concern of some providers.
